I’ve been kind of obsessing on bass guitar for a while now … I’ve always been a big McCartney fan, particularly of his bass playing, and some of my friends have recommended other more challenging music for me recently. I guess I was the last of the cool kids to discover Eberhard Weber, the extraordinary German jazz bassist, and I’ve been listening to him constantly for quite a while now.

So, while I have no pretensions of becoming anywhere near as good as Eberhard Weber, I recently rented a bass guitar and have started to learn to play. A good friend is a pretty proficient bassist and he’s offered to give me occasional lessons in return for editing his term papers. His English is good, but not perfect (he’s from Italy originally) and he could use some help with polishing.

We’ve begun with very basic stuff … some rhythm patterns where I don’t even use the guitar, I’m just clapping a beat to a metronome, and the basics of plucking and damping a bass string. I’m having fun with it, and I hope that things move along fairly quickly, since I’m eager to begin playing some actual tunes.

Once I get to begin playing in earnest, I want to learn the bass line to one of the guest appearances that Weber made, Mother Stands for Comfort, from Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love album. It’s an older album, it came out in the mid Eighties I think, and it’s just beautiful. Weber’s appearance is a standout, but it’s all around a pretty great record.

OK, back to bass-ics now (oh, what a wit).

This morning something kind of strange happened. I walked outside to get my shoes which were drying off from the previous day (I fell into a huge puddle after work and they got soaked), and they weren’t there, so I started looking around.

I didn’t find them, but I did find a few of my Beatles cds that must have fallen into the bush by my steps. Personally, I’ll take The Beatles over shoes any day.

Seriously, who needs shoes? They just stop you connecting to nature completely. When you don’t wear shoes, you get to feel everything you’re stepping on, and it gives a feeling of completion. Even if it’s broken glass. Although thats generally more a feeling of pain and blood flow, than completion, its all part of the natural nature connecting process, which is healthy in the long run.

And if you must wear shoes for some odd reason (for example, I have to wear shoes when i work at the restaurant. I don’t like it, but I do it because otherwise they won’t let me work there…) you should at least wear sandals becuase they don’t close your feet in. I hate the feeling of being closed in. Socks are especially evil, all they do is get lost and get holes in them.

After I found my Beatles CDs I went to have breakfast which was quite good, I had Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Brie cheese on crackers. I think that I’m going to go to classes today. I’m in a very “learn-y” mood.

Have a good day everyone!

For once, my whole family’s in town, so we took advantage of that and went to a Mariners game. The Mariners got killed, but it was nice to see everyone.

William’s been away for a while, I think he went to see Metallica somewhere on the East Coast. Despite the fact that I’m not such a big Metallica fan, I heard they put on a great show, and I think that I’d definitely try to see them if they ever come to Washington. I’d like to see Paul McCartney too, I think he’s planning his farewell tour so I’d like to hear him before he stops touring… In my opinion he’s like God, but a better bass player. I’m pretty psyched, the weather’s been great, so I think I’m going to go on a couple of trips with my buddies.

Be back in a while,

William is 2 years younger than me. He is a devoted metal-head, and has been known to travel across the States if it means seeing a big Maiden or Metallica show.

Gil’s the exact opposite, he doesn’t like leaving Washington at all, and is perfectly comfortable not ever leaving. He’s 10 years older than me, and has a job working as a bank manager in downtown Seattle. Gil is married with one kid, who’s definitely the coolest kid I’ve ever met. On the other hand, William doesn’t look like he’ll settle down anytime soon so my chances of having a nephew from his side are very slim.

Now I guess I’ll talk a bit more about myself .. I’m pretty good at that. I’ve always wanted to go to India, just to trek around with no particular destination, and while I’m there, I’d like to go to Nepal as a side trip.

I really love music, and am always listening to something or other. I’m not very into video games, seeing as I suck at them, and I enjoy reading a lot.

At the moment, I’m reading a biography of Churchill, but it’s a little dense .. I don’t know if I’ll finish it. Ok, I’m going to go volunteer now, I’ll write more later!

Hey all, I know it’s been a while since I posted … I’ve had a load of work to do. I wrote a paper on Oil and US foreign policy. Not too fun …

I haven’t been doing much else. I work part-time at the Mexican restaurant off-campus, and enjoy it immensely.

Hmmm… maybe i should write about my family. Isn’t that what people write about on blogs? Well, I have two brothers and my parents. My brothers are named William and Gil, and my parents names are Sebastien and Celine. They moved to America from France for college, and met at the University of Kansas while studying theatre. Why they left France, to study theatre in Kansas is way beyond me, but maybe you can come up with some better ideas than I’ve been able to.

My dad is a big fan of classic rock, like the Beatles, and Hendrix, and Pink Floyd, and thankfully I’ve inherited his taste in music, because my mom likes new music, by artists that have no talent, and couldn’t play an instrument if their life depended on it. I don’t get it. I really don’t get the appeal of that type of music. Why on earth do people listen to talentless “artists” who don’t write their songs, or play an instrument??? I dunno. You tell me.

Seeing as it’s a great day outside, I’m going to go see if I can catch a game of frisbee or something.

peace and love!

Hey, my name’s Ranger Marcoux, and I’ve decided to start writing a blog.

I’m 19, and I’m a student at the University of Washington, and I’m currently studying Political Science. I was born in Seattle, and have 2 brothers. I’m pretty new at blogging, but I have some experience writing articles for my old high school newspaper, so we’ll see where this takes me.

Chances are, it’ll be everything about nothing, like the name of my site. I like to listen to music, and a pretty wide range of music at that. I’m on a bit of a Beatles kick at the moment though. I also like to read, and i read a bit of everything; thrillers, current events, cookbooks etc … no really, I like to read cookbooks and I’m a pretty good cook.

Well, I gotta get to class, seeing as I’ve definitely missed more than enough classes this month… So i will continue writing soon hopefully.
